HI-My Name is Phil: If you read my Hitting Techniques, Base Running Instruction and Sliding Fundamentals you will enjoy my Bunting Instruction.

BUNTING INSTRUCTION: We will go over different ways you can bunt.

Sacrifice Bunt: That means, you must lay the ball down in fair territory. This way you can advance the runner to the next base. But don't worry it's not an out, if you can advance the runner to the next base. It's called a sacrifice and doesn't go on your average just like a walk or hit by pitch. Start your batting stance even or in front of the plate to ensure the bunt will be in fair territory. As the pitcher starts his windup you move your front foot out and forward and bring your back foot even with your front foot, so that both feet are pointed straight at the pitcher. That's called squaring off.

.

Drag Bunt: If you're right-handed pivot on the balls of your feet so they are half way turned to the pitcher. Put your bat out in front of you after the pitcher releases the ball. Try to lay the ball down the lines or foul. Start running on contact with the ball. If your left-handed start running on the balls of your feet. Start deeper in the batters box as you will be moving forward as the pitch is thrown with your left foot to the front of the batters box. Then bunt the ball down the lines or foul. Step with your right foot towards first base and run to first base.

Push Bunt: Pivot half way around on the balls of your feet. When the ball comes to the bat push it to the opposite field. Right-handers bunt it to the second baseman and left-handers bunt it to the shortstop. Make sure you it goes by the pitcher.

Safety Squeeze: Pivot half way around. Lay the ball down in fair territory. Runner on third base doesn't leave until the ball is on the ground. The runner on third base breaks for home if it's a good bunt. Don't run if you can't make it.

Suicide Squeeze: Move deeper in the batters box to block the catchers view of third base. It also moves the catcher further from home plate in case of a tag. Then pivot half way around on the balls of your feet. When the squeeze is called you must bunt the ball wherever it is pitched fair or foul as to stop the catcher from catching the ball, as the runner will be out as he was running on the start of the windup. Try to bunt the ball back at the pitcher as it is hard for him to make a play and your guaranteed a fair ball. Do not squeeze with a left-handed batter as the pitcher will throw outside and the catcher will tag the runner out coming from third base.
